EVALUATION OF PH EFFECT ON THE PRODUCTION OF SPINELS SYNTHESIS FROM CLAYS

Recently, interest in spinel structures has been increasing due to their remarkable electrical, optical and magnetic properties. Spinels are mineral structures that get crystallize in the cubic (isometric) crystal system with the general formula of AB2X4. Cobalt aluminate (CoAl2O4) is a member of the spinel family of structures. Cobalt aluminate stands out with its high mechanical resistance, thermal and chemical stability and excellent color performance. The characteristic feature of cobalt aluminate spinel is that it has a bright blue color, also known as Thenard blue. This spinel is widely used in many fields, such as coloring of various materials, humidity sensors, photodegradation of organic pollutants, as catalysts of combustion reactions. There are various production methods to synthesize cobalt aluminate, such as solid state, sol-gel, hydrothermal, combustion reaction, co-precipitation, nitrate route, polyacrylamide gel, microwave-assisted colloidal technique. In this study, cobalt aluminate nanoparticles were produced by ultrasonic assisted-co-precipitation method. In order to obtain the bright blue color of spinel, clay, a natural material, was used as the aluminum source. With this research, the use of clay as a natural aluminum source was examined and the effect of the pH on the morphology and characteristics of the final product in cobalt aluminate production was investigated. Characterization studies were carried out using XRD and color analysis methods. It is aimed to contribute to the literature by evaluating the experimental results obtained.
